What is Mango canning?

Remember the old story of the grasshopper and the ant? The ant collects food and saves it so that he can eat and enjoy the winters. It is the same thing you are doing, when you do Mango Canning. When you have so many mangoes and you know that you won’t be able to finish those ripe mangoes. You cannot keep those mangoes in the freezer as the fruit gets destroyed. The best possible thing to do is Mango Canning so that you don’t waste any of those ripe sweet mangoes. You can preserve the mangoes and keep on enjoying the mangoes even when the mango season is over. Isn’t that a wonderful idea?

Process of Canning

Canning of fruits is done by breaking down the natural enzyme by heating the fruits in a liquid in a closed container. For this, you need to be aware of a few food preservation methods.

  • Water bath is a method used in the canning process. Generally, fresh fruits are used in the canning process. Before you start the canning process you have to wash the fruits and equipments you are using for this purpose. The canned mangoes are to be kept for a longer period of time so we have to ensure that the utensils and all the equipments are free from bacteria and properly sterilized.  
  • You need to peel the mangoes, slice it and remove it from the seed. Dissolve sugar in boiling water as required and simmer the mango pieces in it and pack the fruit into jars and cover it with hot sugar syrup. You may also sweeten the mangoes in honey if you don’t prefer sugar. Though canning-mangoes seem time consuming but this process lets you to relish your favourite fruit even after its season. You can use these canned mangoes while making ice creams and puddings.

There are different ways through which you can preserve mangoes like you can make jellies, marmalades, jams, pulps and more. You can also preserve it as whole fruit or large pieces and cook it in thick sugar syrup till they become tender and transparent.

Moreover, if you want to try how these canned mangoes taste, they are easily available in markets all processed and canned. So, next time, when you feel that you got more ripe mangoes which you cannot finish, you can surely can those mangoes. You don’t need any sophisticated machineries or ingredients or chemicals, all the needed equipments are right there with you readily available at home.  Enjoy the taste of mangoes even after the mango season through canned mangoes.
