Dried Mangoes

Dry fruits like almonds, cashew nuts walnuts are very tasty as well as nutritious. When we see these dry fruits we all think ‘is there any way we can make and eat mangoes just like dry fruits?’ Many people look for ways to preserve mangoes and they must be wondering how to keep their favourite fruit for a long time. Here is good news that you can preserve the ripe juicy mangoes by drying them. There are many ways to dry mangoes and use it the same way as dry fruits. The mango pieces can be dehydrated and it is known as dried mangoes.  It is a way to preserve the mangoes and you can enjoy them even after the mango season.

The dried mangoes don’t come under the category of processed foods, as there are no chemicals used for keeping the food fresh. So these dried mangoes are commonly eaten on their own as snacks. These dried mangoes are either raw or sweetened by adding sugar or fruit juices to improve its taste and colour.

There are mainly two methods used for drying the mangoes. The first method is the traditional way of drying the fruit pieces under the sun. The mangoes are peeled, deseeded and then sliced. These slices are placed on wooden planks kept under the sun to get it dried. You can also dry it by keeping them in the freezer.

Freeze drying is the quickest way of drying the mangoes. Once the water molecules have frozen you get a perfectly preserved mango. These freezer- dried mangoes don’t have to be kept in the freezer itself; you can use them as other dry mangoes. The dried mangoes are commercially produced as well using commercial Dehydrators. In the hydrators there are pressure chambers where the temperature and humidity are tightly controlled. Mango pieces are placed in these chambers the moisture from the fruit will slowly evaporate and leaves a well dried mango slices that will be ready for packing.

Dried mangoes are popular as can be eaten as a snack, it can also be baked and it can also be used as toppings on ice creams, fruit salads or cereals.  Apart from the taste benefits it is good for health as well containing fibre, vitamins and minerals. As well ripe mangoes are used for drying it has a sweet taste and is liked by kids as well.

Isn’t it an excellent way to preserve your favourite fruit? For drying these fruits there are no preservatives or chemicals added, hence they don’t come under the category of preserved foods and so can be consumed without any worries. So you can now stop worrying about what to do with the well ripened mangoes, you don’t have to throw them away thinking that they will get destroyed. You can preserve them and store them in an air tight container and enjoy the mangoes even after the mango season.
